What is Propolis & Why is it Considered a Superfood?

A few months ago, during my visit to the farmer’s market to buy wildflower honey to help with my allergies I learned about a functional food called propolis from our local honey vendor. Propolis is a viscous resinous, gummy substance consisting of waxes, essential oils and pollen that bees collect from different plant species to make the beehive. Propolis contains micronutrients, vitamins and minerals that make it useful as both an oral supplement and as a topical. The flavonoid, phenol, alkaloid, terpenoid, alcohol and fatty acid content of propolis makes it useful as an antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antifungal, and antiallergenic properties.
